Dr. Dumanian trained in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital,  plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, and hand surgery at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  He began at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1996 and is now the  Chief of Plastic Surgery.  He received the American Association of Plastic Surgeons Research Achievement Award in 2019 for the development of the Targeted Muscle Reinnervation surgical procedure that decreases the pain and phantoms felt by amputees.  In his spare time, he developed Duramesh Mesh Suture—the first new surgical suture design in 30 years and only the third suture design ever.  It is currently sold worldwide including Ireland and the United States.
