Samir Abboud, MD

Dr. Samir Abboud is Chief and founding member of the Division of Emergency Radiology in the Department of Radiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He studied physics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and subsequently earned his medical degree and Masters of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, where he was also a research fellow at the FDA with an emphasis on medical physics. He specialized in radiology and completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, after which he was recruited to create the division of Emergency Radiology in 2019. He has published articles on topics including the physics of CT image generation, signal detection and image quality. His current focus is optimization of imaging benefit across a multi-hospital system emergency patient population, with a strong interest in the expanding role of AI in radiology.

More importantly, Dr Abboud is a loving husband and father to two young girls and, when time permits, a happy sailor on the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

Judi O’Malley

Judi O’ Malley is a patient centric, customer focused and commercially driven CEO and Co Founder of Spiorad Medical. 

Judi began her career as a Clinical Vascular Physiologist with the national Health Service Executive HSE. She then went on to study IP Law with The Law Society Ireland and Project Management with Smurfit Business School.

Judi then moved to industry where she gained commercial experience in sales and marketing roles with leading cardiovascular multinationals, Medtronic, Abbott, and J&J  managing their portfolio across the UK and Ireland. It was here she saw a gap in the market for an efficient large French vascular closure device and formed Spiorad with the backing of her previous physician customers and end users of these devices.

Barry Scannell

Barry is a partner in the Technology group of William Fry. Barry is internationally recognised as a leading expert in the area of AI law. He advises clients on issues relating to text and data mining, AI copyright infringement, machine learning, and AI ownership. He has expertise in AI specific contracts, licences, and dataset agreements. Barry specialises in advising on the AI Act and other legislation such as the DSA and GDPR from an AI compliance perspective.

Barry was appointed by the Irish Government to Ireland’s AI Advisory Council; has recently completed the writing stage of his PhD on AI and copyright; and is a member of the Law Society of Ireland’s IP & Technology Committee.

Deborah Dullen

Raymond Hegarty

Raymond Hegarty is an IP strategist who has studied in Ireland and France. He has a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering, an MBA, a master’s degree in medical AI, a postgraduate diploma in European law and a master’s degree in IP law.

He has built IP-intensive businesses in Japan, Ireland and Luxembourg, assembled & developed teams and implemented processes & systems for exploitation of IP. He has executed several billion dollars of patent and trademark transactions and has managed international commercialisation of a portfolio of 40,000 patents.

Mr Hegarty is the best-selling author of three books on IP strategy. He has advised the European Commission, the OECD and policy makers in several countries on national and international innovation strategies.

Martin Ryan

Martin is a lecturer in Product Design at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), a multi-award winning designer, entrepreneur and co-founder of Think Actionable. In 2005 Martin invented and patented the world’s first cantilevered saddle – A revolutionary equestrian saddle which he conceived and developed to improve performance and comfort for horse and rider. On launch, the saddle established a customer base in 20 countries and successfully introduced a new paradigm to equestrian sports. In 2020 Martin entered a patent licensing deal with Stubben, a global leader in equestrian sports equipment for over 130 years.
Today, Martin actively collaborates with the HSE Spark Innovation Network, leading on several design-led projects across various healthcare settings. He has co-authored “ARRIVE,” a seminal book on design strategy and innovation, and advises on embedding innovation capabilities, building market insight, and delivering breakthrough innovations in products and services. Martin’s work in design has earned him numerous awards, including the JEC World Innovation Award (Paris), the Dyson Design Award and an IDI (Institute of Designers Ireland) Award.

Dr Daniel Derman

Dr. Derman has been practicing internal medicine since 1988. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he graduated cum laude, and his medical degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago campus. Dr. Derman completed his internal medicine residency at Northwestern University where he was Chief Resident and a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical Honor Society. Dr. Derman was President of Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group, a primary care multi-specialty group of 65 physicians, which he founded in 1993. Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group was acquired by Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he holds the title of Senior Vice President of Innovation. Dr. Derman is board certified in internal medicine. His special interests include preventive medicine and nutrition. He is the Associate Medical Director of Northwestern Medicine Executive Health.
